Founding Bohren-members Thorsten Benning, Morten Gass, Reiner Henseleit and Robin Rodenberg started playing music together in 1988. This Pre-Bohren-era featured bands like Chronical Diarrhoea, 7 Inch Boots and Macabre Farmhouse which played a metal-based hardcore in different varietys.

Driven by the idea of a more unique style of music, they formed Bohren (german word for drilling) in 1992. As Bohren they created an unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath doom and down tuned Autopsy sounds.

1993 Bohren recorded their debut 7" ep for Suggestion Records, in the same year they added "& the Club of Gore" to their name (to honour the dutch instrumental masters Gore).

1994 Bohren released their first longplayer Gore Motel, followed by Midnight Radio in 1995, both on Epistrophy Records. 1996 Reiner Henseleit left the band. In 1997 Christoph Clöser joined Bohren and in this cast the band recorded the albums Sunset Mission (2000) and Black Earth (2002) for the Hamburg-based label Wonder. In 2004, Ipecac re-released the latter.
